New York Events
New York is a truly global city, and as a result of this, you will find that there are always many different New York events that take place on a daily basis in the city. From religious festivals that are observed by small communities in the city through to parades through the heart of Manhattan and are attended by millions of people, New York events offer a unique insight into the people and culture of this remarkable city.
Perhaps the 3 most famous celebrations in New York are Thanksgiving, New Year and St Patrick’s Day.
Every year, Macy’s Department Store on Fifth Avenue have sponsored a parade through the heart of the city that includes floats and the famous floating characters. While the parade, which takes place on the third weekend in November, may not have all the glitz of the Rio carnival, it is just as widely attended, and is a great day out for kids who will love seeing the sight of their favorite cartoon characters in the form of huge floating inflatables in the air above them.
The New Year party in Times Square in the heart of the city is probably the biggest New York event of the year. More than a million people take to the streets of Manhattan in order to listen to music, have a few drinks, and enjoy themselves as the minutes count down to the turning of the year. Revelers ignore the cold and simply enjoy the unique atmosphere of being in such a huge group of people who all want to have fun.
The annual St Patrick’s Day parade on March 17th is a great time to visit the city. You find more people claiming Irish descent than you would in Dublin, and all the bars and clubs sell gallons of Guinness. There is a sea of green throughout the city, and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the craic with your New York friends.
In addition to these main New York events, there are also myriad smaller ones, art shows, barbeques in central Park, and many more, so you can be certain that when you are in New York, there will be people celebrating something that you are interested in, and will welcome you to join in with them.
